GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. On Friday Mesa County Commissioners joined school officials and project engineers, celebrating the completion of improvements to a major corridor. The D 1/2 Road corridor spans from 30 to 32 road, and the changes will impact hundreds of students.
The section of road carries more than 7,000 vehicles per day in the close vicinity of two elementary schools, Chatfield and Pear Park, with an estimated 200 students that walk to school.
Before construction the existing road was comprised of two lanes with broken sidewalks, insufficient drainage that led to regular flooding and crosswalks that needed safety improvements.
Improvements include a wider, three-lane road with a center turn lane and shoulder, addition of extra sidewalk, sufficient drainage and installation of signalized pedestrian crossings at the crosswalks for each school. Additionally, replacement of the 31 Road bridge removed 101 structures from the FEMA flood hazard zone.
The total cost for construction of the improvements was just under $5 million.
