Mesa County Holds Primary Election

MESA COUNTY, Colo.- If you still haven't voted in Mesa County's primary election, you’re not too late. Tuesday is the last day to cast your vote, and you can participate by heading to a number of polling places.

"Come out and try out the machines or get a paper ballot and we will be happy to serve you," said Sheila Reiner, Mesa County's clerk and recorder.

In beginning of June, Mesa County officials sent out over 50,000 mail-in ballots for the election. As of Monday, they had only received a little more than 30 percent of them.

“We haven't seen the turnout we did even in the last primary, but there’s not a lot of contested races on the ballot, so that may have something to do with it,” said Reiner.

Reiner says another reason for this year’s low turnout could be the new date of the primary election. “Normally, we hold the election in August, but the calendar needed to move up so they could give plenty of time to give to oversee voters when voting by mail,” said Reiner.

With county commissioner and state representative seats up for vote, Mesa County officials want to hear from everyone and say they hope these mail-in ballots will reach numerous residents.

“It’s also significantly cheaper to run those and everyone knows that we can save a little money here in the county,” said Catherine Lenhart, Mesa County's election director.

Officials say these local positions tend to affect the public more on a daily basis.

“I think that people forget that it's not only a 4-year cycle, you shouldn’t just vote for the president,” said Reiner. “You should get involved in your local representatives as well.”

All ballots, whether they are mailed in or submitted at polling places, are counted in the same manner. Results are expected to come in just after 7 p.m Tuesday.

Marilyn Marks was right, these processes are rigged to the core. Those people that work in that office are so incompetent, I use to only deal with one person there that was pleasant to talk to and the other day I walked by the office and it seemed as if he wasn't there anymore. Maybe his competence scared the incompetent and they removed him. Everyone else is rude to the core. Goes to show something's fishy in that office. Revolt! America, revolt!!!

It doesn't matter. The election was already decided weeks ago. This is just a charade.
