Maverick Classic Considers Palisade Leg

PALISADE, Colo. - Palisade is in discussion with Colorado Mesa University on how both entities can bring a leg of the popular Maverick Classic to the wine country.

Officials say the race has about 150 riders, as well as the potential to bring in around 2,000 spectators.

"We would love to find a way to bring it into our downtown on a start and finish. They'd like to run the Fruit and Wine Byway," explained Rich Sales, the town's administrator.

Collegiate racers come from all over the country. Palisade officials say the tourism dollars they bring in will significantly boost the town's economic vitality.

This year's race will be held April 20 & 21. The first leg will be in Fruita and the second will be in downtown Grand Junction.
