Some folks are staying active while learning how to protect themselves at the same time.

The Martial Arts Research Systems of Colorado held their black belt extravaganza Sunday, for those who've been training for at least three years.

"I do it for the love of learning," said Toni Miller, owner of Martial Arts Research Systems of Colorado.

These folks train day after day for at least three years before performing in the big black belt extravaganza.

"It's very important just to help one grow as a person individually, and gain leadership and self-discipline in a lot of different aspects. Also, it's great for self defense too," said Miller.

Anyone can start martial arts, regardless of their age.

"It's a blast, it's so hard to describe. There's so many things that come with it; accomplishment, fun, comradery, all of it," said Miller.

Allsion Oviatt, a little girl who's been training for three and a half years said martial arts has changed her life.

"It was a dream to be good at martial arts, and now I've had some hard changes in my life and martial arts keeps me going," said Oviatt.

Not only does martial arts inspire her, but it keeps her feeling strong and safe.

"If I was up to somebody that was around my size and my age, I could probably take them down," said Oviatt.
