GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- A man accused of attacking another person repeatedly with a full-size ax will spend more than three years behind bars.

Mark Hirschberg, 55, was sentenced to 42 months after pleading guilty Tuesday to first-degree assault with a deadly weapon resulting in serious bodily injury.

Police say Hirschberg assaulted an unidentified 33-year-old victim with an ax at Whitman Park before fleeing on a bicycle.

Hirschberg rode to the Colorado River and then swam to a small island, where police and sheriff's officials arrested him.
