Many De-Icers Are Dangerous to Pets

by KREX News Room

Now that there is measurable snow on the ground some may be tempted to use de-icer to clear their walkways, but animal officials say you might want to think twice about what kind of de-icer you use if you have pets.

Many de-icers contain calcium magnesium acetate, or salt, which can cause serious health problems for pets if they walk over them.

"Exposure to salt for dogs causes Dermatitis. It can cause their paws to swell up and it can actually cause internal burns," says Kristi Bush of Chow Down Pet Supplies.

Pet- and environmentally-friendly de-icers like Safe Paw and Petastic have no salt, don't cause damage to sidewalks and can work in colder temperatures than normal de-icer.
