Man Collects Over 160 Turkeys For Residents in Need

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The Salvation Army puts on a community dinner for Thanksgiving every year, and a lot of food is needed to pull it off. Last year they assisted 1,700 people, needing over 100 turkeys and seven gallons of gravy.

For three days one Mike Strasser has been camping outside of City Market collecting food for the feast. Strasser says one can of food means one less hungry person and he's made it his mission to help as many hungry people as he can.

Claudia Jackson, the public relations director for the Salvation Army, said, "The families in need grow every year so it becomes more difficult."

"The need never goes away, hunger never sleeps," Strasser said.

Jackson said, "This time of year if you ever walk through my pantry my shelves are empty."

"I don't want to see hungry people in the Grand Valley and I don't want to see hungry people in America, and there's too many people hungry here. Community members have donated over 160 turkeys, canned goods, fresh vegetables, onions, potatoes." said Strasser.

"He's raised over 1,800 pounds of turkey for us, which we'll use now towards Christmas because we've filled our Thanksgiving quota. So for us, it's huge," Jackson.

"Somebody in America is always hungry, and it needs to stop," Strasser said.

Whether someone gave one can or an entire cart of food, Strasser is grateful. To him, no donation is too small to make a difference.

This is his fourth year putting on the food drive, and he say's it's grown each and every one.

It was my honor and will continue to be my honor to help the Salvatiobn Army in their efforts to stop hunger here in the Grand Valley. All together we raised 11071 pounds of food this past weekend for those in need. Thank you to those who stopped by and donated. It was a pleasure to meet you.
