DURANGO, Colo. (AP) - A 37-year-old Hermosa man accused of shooting a close friend to death has agreed to plead guilty to a reduced charge of criminally negligent homicide.
The Durango Herald reports Justin Wiese signed the agreement Friday and faces up to three years in prison for the April 2011 death of 42-year-old Darrick Zuber. Wiese was initially charged with second-degree murder.
He called 911 to report finding Zuber's body on the floor after Zuber spent the night at his home near Durango. An arrest affidavit says Wiese told the dispatcher Zuber committed suicide, but a medical examiner's report says the fatal shot entered the back of Zuber's left shoulder at an angle impossible to have been self-inflicted.
District Attorney Todd Risberg says he can't discuss specifics of the case before sentencing.
