Man Accused of Beating a Child Near Death Pleads in Court

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- A man accused of beating a 4-year-old close to death appears in court and pleads guilty.
Jessie Martinez, 30, pleaded guilty to one count of felony child abuse resulting in serious injury Thursday morning.
In the plea agreement, Martinez will face up to 15 to 27 years in prison as well as 5 years of mandatory probation.
Martinez as well as his girlfriend, Ashley Wallace, were arrested shortly after investigators were called to St. Mary's hospital for a potential child abuse case.
The child admitted to the hospital on January 13, 2013 had suffered a broken right arm, serious brain damage and had numerous bruises on his body in various stages of healing.
The child's father Aaron Wallace tell NewsChannel Five the boy is now in foster care and still suffers from brain swelling, which will eventually lead to additional surgery.
Aaron adds that his son is confined to a bed, unable to move his limbs fully, with the exception of his left arm.
Martinez is scheduled to appear in court on July 26 for his sentencing hearing. Until then, he will be held without bond at the Mesa County Jail.
