Mammogram Party To Encourage Women To Get Tested

Rifle, Colo.- It was ladies night out at Grand River Health in Rifle Wednesday night.

The unique party was to alleviate any fears, and encourage women to get their annual mammogram exam.

"Like if I just called and made an appointment it could have been another two years before I came in, so it was definitely the party," said Lisa Caskey, mammogram party attendee.

The party included massages, manicures and pedicures, food, and dessert.

"Bring a friend with you, or bring a family member and have some food, or get your nails done and just enjoy it a little bit," said Lindsay Jacox, mammography coordinator.

"One out of eight women in Colorado will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in their lifetime," said Patty Zucco, mission coordinator for Susan G. Komen, Aspen affiliate.

The Grand River Health center was the first in the nation to get a 3D mammogram machine which exposes layers of breast tissue.

"The 3D, the tomosynthesis technology we are able to capture anywhere from 40 to 80 images per breast, per image is you're getting a lot more through of an exam," said Jacox.

Officials say women age 40 and up are supposed to get a mammogram test annually.

"Every time I get one, I think about these people who whine and complain about how painful it is. It doesn't hurt. I don't know what's happening in there, but it doesn't happen, it's not painful," said Lisa Caskey.

The testing alone takes no longer than 10 minutes.

"You have got to pay attention and take care of yourself," said Caskey.

"Early detection saves lives," said Zucco.

Officials with the Grand River Health Facility welcome mammogram testing Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. They also accept walk-ins.
