MONTROSE, Colo.- Some major developments are on the way to construct a water park in Montrose. The Great Outdoors Colorado Board approved funding for the Montrose Sports Park, River Trail and Field Renovation project at the Baldridge Park. Officials say this will bring $259,384 in lottery proceeds to Montrose. “We are building something that will cater to the technical, high end kayakers and river boarders on one end, but also the families that like to be out in the water and do some tubing,” said John Harris, director of public works for the City of Montrose. The city's new water sports park will be built along the Uncompahgre River through the Baldridge Park and director of Montrose Recreation District Ken Sherbenou says this will not only help boost tourism, but the quality of life in the city. “When you got strong parks and recreation infrastructure, there's more opportunities to be healthy and for good, strong community building,” said Sherbenou. “We really anticipate with these new additions, folks coming to Montrose and looking at Montrose as a more recreation destination.” Another part of this project is to renovate Ute fields. Sherbenou hopes this will help strengthen adult softball leagues, which is the recreation’s biggest program. “We have about 50 teams every season and so we are going to be doing improvements on our ball fields,” said Sherbenou. “We will have new infield material, new fencing, and new amenities for people to enjoy when they are down here for programs.” As the recreation department works to continue to provide a higher quality of life in Montrose, area moms like Emily Ploussard could rest assure there are new family activities to come in the future. “There are so many kids and its growing tremendously here and we need something fun for our kids to go out and play,” said Ploussard. The water sports park is expected to be the biggest one on the Western Slope and free to the public to use.
