WHITEWATER, Colo.- An early morning crash on Highway 50 claimed the life of 23-year old Amanda Lynn Chavez of Whitewater on Friday.

The Mesa County Coroner's Office confirmed the identity.

Around 7:30 a.m. authorities responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 50 near mile marker 40 in the Whitewater area.

According to Colorado State Patrol, Chavez was driving a black Lexus heading eastbound on Highway 50.

They say she started driving off the right side of the road, then overcorrected and drove through the median into oncoming traffic.

Chavez's car was t-boned by a woman driving a white Subaru heading westbound.

Officials say Chavez wasn't wearing a seat belt and died at the scene due to crash-related injuries.

According to the coroner's office, the cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries and the manner of death was accidental.

CSP officials say the driver of the Subaru was wearing a seat belt, and she suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. She was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital.

According to the coroner's office, non-use of safety restraints and speed are considered factors in this crash.

Traffic heading westbound was temporarily halted while crews cleaned up the scene.

The road has since been reopened.
