GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Loma man accused of abusing 60 head of cattle was in front of a Mesa County Judge Friday.

John Lawton of Loma has been charged with 71 counts of cruelty to animals, a Class 1 misdemeanor.

Prosecutors said new information out of the sheriff's office has led them to file a motion to amend the current charges and to expand the date range.

In April, authorities say they found more than 60 cows in poor condition, many which were tied to farm equipment, and there were many animal carcasses on Lawton's property.

Authorities said it was one of the largest animal seizures in Mesa County history.

Lawton's trial is currently set for Oct. 23.
