GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Mesa County Fair is just around the corner, and 12 local wineries are putting their wines to the test.

Four judges were recruited from Colorado and surrounding states to judge a wine competition.

There were more than 70 different wines from 12 different wineries. The judges observed the fermentation of the grapes, and checked to see if the wine had the correct balance of acid, fruit intensity and tannins. "You kind of have to put your personal preferences aside and you break it down to categories or components, and you judge those subjectively as you can, but it's tough to do sometimes," said Jay Bileti, an international wine master.

The judges awarded a few gold, silver and bronze medals. In order to qualify for the competition, a wine had to be 75 percent Mesa County grapes.

The winning bottles will be on display at the Mesa County Fair, which takes place July 17-21.
