GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Grand Valley kids spent the day learning to put safety first.

The annual Mesa County Safety Fair took place on Thursday at the Mesa Mall.

The fair targeted elementary kids from 2nd through 4th grades, teaching them how to protect themselves while at home, and school and at play.

The Colorado State Patrol and the Mesa County Sheriff's Office were among the dozens of vendors on hand.

“If we can influence a mind at this age right now, its potentially not a problem for much later on when they do get their licenses and they are driving themselves,” said Christ Wright, trooper with the Colorado State Patrol.

The free event lasted from 9 a.m. until 3:30 Thursday afternoon.

Officials were expecting more than 2,500 people to attend this year's fair.
