Local Students Learn Lesson in Manners

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Whether it's an inappropriate hand shake, or not knowing to hold the door open, some kids may not have the best manners. But students at Pear Park Elementary got a crash course on Thursday, on everything proper.

During the school's “Manners Day,” the third graders learned things like how to behave in public, eat a meal properly, and how to make and receive phone calls.

Teachers at the school say it was an easy way of teaching their students how to be an appropriate citizen of the community.

“Ultimately the goal with elementary, middle school and high school education is to produce productive, positive citizens in our world,” said Shannon Pitton, teacher at Pear Park Elementary. “So hopefully they will take the skills they learn academically but also what they are learning during Manners Day.”

The kids finished off their lessons with a lunch and ordered off a menu to practice their new skills. Their teachers pretended to be their servers to ensure they remembered to do everything the right way.
