Group Helping Women in Africa Seeks Community Support

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Helping needy individuals is what they’re known for, but now the nonprofit organization, Light Gives Heat, is looking for help from our community.

The group employs over 100 women in Uganda by purchasing products they make in Africa and selling the items across the world. However, in an effort to continue to provide these sustainable incomes, the association has entered an online contest.

"This could be a huge thing for us," said Megan Glenn, volunteer coordinator of Light Gives Heat. "We're in second place out of 30 causes. We're down about 1,400 votes right now and we've been staying kind of consistent at that for the last week or so."

A company called Cultivate Wine is offering the Facebook competition, and plans on giving away prizes to the top five winners. With the first prize being $50,000, Light Gives Heat is shooting for the gold.

"It’s so easy and it literally takes 12 seconds,” said Teresa Hansow of Light Gives Heat. “People always say they want to volunteer, but they don’t have time to volunteer or they don't have the money to donate; this is an easy way to donate and help our cause."

This is the first and last time the organization is entering the contest, because you can only participate one time. Since the group is a nonprofit organization, they rely immensely on donations.

"I know it's kind of something you don’t think about doing,” said Glenn ... “or think, I don't know, does it really make a difference, my one vote or if I don't vote today, but it does."

Light Gives Heat officials also teach English, literacy and health classes to their employees in Africa, and add that all the winnings will go directly toward helping them. To cast your vote, click here.
