Local Officials Weigh in on Voter Registration Issues

MESA COUNTY, Colo.- On Monday Colorado's county clerks sent a four-page letter of complaint to the state's top elections officer, Republican Secretary of State Scott Gessler. On Tuesday, local officials weighed in on the matter.

Sheila Reiner, Mesa County clerk and recorder, says that Gessler made many last minute changes when people register this year, but that there was not enough time to fully test the changes.

While she says many of the changes have been great, trying to implement them during an election year has caused many problems.

Officials have expressed concern over a new mobile registration application.

Reiner also says a method to try and find unregistered voters caused a lot of confusion among voters.

"The data-matching criteria, it wasnt quite as good as it needed to be, and so if there were any variations between the name on the driver's license database and our voter registration database, then you got a card that said you weren't registered, and a lot of people are registered that got that card," she said.

Reiner says if you are having issues registering online Tuesday or are unsure whether you are registered, you can call the elections office at 970-244-1662.

An election provisions states that if you did try to register online before the deadline, but ran into complications, you can still be accommodated after the registration deadline.
