FRUITA, Colo.- Some very unique animals are out in Fruita to fundraise for a new zoo.

Iguanas, birds, snakes, tortoises and guinea pigs were some of the animals out on display Saturday.

The Grand Valley Zoological Quest is a nonprofit organization that is trying to raise enough awareness and money to build a zoo.

"Everyone's coming up and saying, 'When's the zoo going to open?' Well people, it's up to you. If everyone gets behind us we can make this dream come alive," said Gary Rechten, veterinarian at Columbine Hospital.

They hope to land a zoo location in the Kokopelli Plaza in Fruita.

So far they have $130,000, and they need $1.2 million total.

Once the money is raised organizers say they will build a zoo resembling a tropical forest.

Please don't give money for this. We do not need another golf course, skating rink, baseball team, etc. that the taxpayer must pay for.
