Local Longboards Gain International Attention

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The only longboard manufacturer in Grand Junction, Honey Skateboards, has recently experienced major growth in sales on an international level.

After setting a personal sales goal of 300 boards in one month, it became clear that the Western Slope isn’t the only place enjoying Mike Mahoney’s longboards. “Our international business has grown about 25 percent of our overall business,” said Mahoney, owner of Honey Skateboards.

Mahoney says distributors in the United Kingdom, Belgium, Sweden, Brazil and Australia have been seeking out those handcrafted boards for the summer. “Distributors internationally will stock up for the months to come. That’s what really helped us,” said Mahoney.

He says not only is it good for business, but it’s encouraging to be recognized for his boards, which he describes as unique in look and construction. “I can’t imagine anything more fun to be doing than my love for woodworking and passion for skating,” said Mahoney.

He also says since the longboard business is seasonal, they do rely strongly on the sales they see from Australia, since the summer season there lines up with the winter season in the U.S.
