Local Group Remembers Black Hawk War Sergeant

by John Dias

Grand Junction - On Monday, a local group remembered a veteran of the Black Hawk War during a headstone setting dedication service. Sergeant Peter Buck died in Grand Junction in 1896, and there have been no records found that document the final resting place for him. However, his headstone was recently discovered at a resident's home in Grand Junction.

When the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War became aware of the situation, they approached the Veterans Cemetery of Western Colorado to honor the sergeant.

“Now, he gets honored with the rest of the veterans,” said Camp Commander Garry Brewer. “We don't ever want to forget any veteran's service, and that's why he's here with his comrades. His body may not be here, but his name will. He will never be forgotten on Memorial Day or Veterans Day.”

The headstone was placed by the front of the cemetery entrance in hopes that all who pass by will honor Sergeant Buck.
