Lawmakers Push for Bill That Gives Marijuana Rights to States

WASHINGTON- Even before Gov. John Hickenlooper ratifies Amendment 64, lawmakers around the nation are urging the federal government to back off from any potential attempts to block it.

Democrat Rep. Diana DeGette of Colorado's 1st Congressional District has introduced a bipartisan bill that would add a provision to the Federal Controlled Substances Act.

It would clarify that state marijuana laws shall not be pre-empted by federal law.

The legislation is called the Respect States' and Citizens' Rights Act.

It has support from Colorado Republican Rep. Mike Coffman and Democrat Rep. Jared Polis.

Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, is also sponsoring the bill, as well as other representatives in Maryland, Oregon, California, Tennessee and Arizona.

That would mean that pot could be combined in cigarettes and sold legally that way also, thereby helping out the tobacco industry. Cool!
