GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Local law enforcement officers were recognized on Wednesday, for their continued lifesaving efforts.
Dozens of officers from across the Western Slope received certificates of achievement in areas pertaining to DUI enforcement and seatbelt enforcement.
Officials say about a third of all national crashes are DUI related.
“The numbers are going up again in Colorado,” said Gary Coe, of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “For several years we were going down in the number of fatalities. In 2011, 2012, the numbers are going back up again.”
Officials say seatbelt enforcement in our state is also important, since even though the observed seat belt usage rate is around 81 percent, 61 percent of all the fatal crashes have drivers or passengers that were not wearing a seatbelt.
