Laser Therapy Sees a Rise in Popularity

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- As health and beauty concerns become a bigger part of our everyday lives, a certain type of treatment is seeing a rapid rise in popularity.

According to the most recent statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of laser skin resurfacing treatments has more than doubled in the last decade.

It turns out the benefits of laser treatments can be more than just skin deep.

“Well actually, people are going more this route because of the downtime,” said Lisa Holmes, a laser specialist at Bellezza Laser Aesthetics. “I don't think people like the cut and paste look, the pulled back, and they’re going more away from that fake look and going more towards laser. There is so much more we can do with laser.”

From hair and tattoo removal to eliminating dark spots, Holmes says laser treatment has a variety of uses.

“We see people with acne in adolescents and adults,” said Holmes. “There are a lot of underlying causes that lasers can help."

Health officials say nearly 500,000 procedures across the country are done each year.

But as this new treatment because more popular, doctors say some folks are beginning to develop certain misunderstandings.

“People have a misconception that lasers are all about vanity and tight skin and these kinds of things,” said Dr. Scott Rollins of the Integrative Medicine Center of Western Colorado.

However, health officials say there are medical benefits to laser treatment that the public might not understand.

“Things like pre-cancer, sun damage or broken capillaries from sun damage, surface wrinkles from sun damage, all of these things can be repaired with lasers,” said Dr. Rollins.

Holmes says this all-natural procedure has another benefit: it won't hurt your wallet.

“It’s cheaper than plastic surgery,” said Holmes. “It’s not just one treatment but a serious of treatments.”

The treatments are so quick, officials say they can be done on someone’s lunch break.
