Labor Bill for Firefighters Moves to Colo. House

DENVER (AP)- A bill allowing Colorado firefighters to have collective bargaining even when local governments oppose it continues to move forward in the Legislature.

The proposal received initial approval Monday and on Tuesday, the State Senate voted 19-15 in favor of the bill.

It now moves to the Colorado House.

The labor measure would affect only a few hundred professional firefighters who don't currently have collective bargaining rights.

But the bill is controversial because local governments say it takes away from their control over employment decisions.

A similar bill was vetoed by then-governor Bill Ritter in 2009.

Governor Hickenlooper hasn't said whether he'll support the measure.
