Keeping the Roads Safe for Students

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Grand Junction Police hope for a community effort to keep roads safe for students as classes begin for School District 51 next week.

Authorities and school officials agree that drivers, parents and students each have a responsibility on the road.

Officials want students to be careful when crossing the street. Although pedestrians have the right of way, making eye contact with drivers almost guarantees that they're being seen.

Police information coordinator for the Grand Junction Police, Kate Porras, said, "They just need to be paying attention, don't be distracted by cell phones, radios, those types of things. Focus on your driving and focus on what's going on around you."

Porras also said that school zones will be activated Monday morning and flashing lights mean you have to slow down.

Police officers will be patrolling all school zones and authorities say that going one to four miles per hour over the speed limit in a school zone is a $120 fine.

Safety officials say the most congested areas are inside city limits. Some other busy areas include Patterson Road and 15th Street and Patterson Road and 27 1/2 Road.

Officials want students to use pedestrian crosswalks and follow traffic lights.
