Lawmaker Questions Hickenlooper's Child Welfare Plan

DENVER, Colo. A state lawmakers is questioning the second phase of Governor John Hickenlooper's child welfare plan, which aims to protect children and keep families healthy.

The updated plan builds on an effort first announced by the governor nearly a year ago.

Among details of the plan includes a common practice approach for all 64 counties and increased transparency. Hickenlooper asked lawmakers to set aside $22 million to fund the changes.

While State Sen. Steve King applauds the governor's efforts, he says the devil's in the details. Particularly on the matter of a statewide hotline, "There are a couple places on the Western Slope that have very functional well-working hotlines and I would hate to see a situation where those calls are routed all the way to Denver only to be re-routed back to Grand Junction."

The executive director of human services commented that the enhanced plan takes child protection in Colorado to the next level.
