Kannah Creek Implements New Recycling Program

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- A popular brewery is planning to pour more than just beer into the community. They're also hoping to shine a light on a new recycling program that's helping them become a greener company.

Kannah Creek has been recycling things like cardboard since opening day, but the brewery started an entirely new program just last week. It's already making a difference.

“It's good for business, it's good for the environment, it's good for Grand Junction,” said Ryan Hendershot, manager at Kannah Creek.

Most of Kannah Creek's raw materials from both the kitchen and bar are recyclable resources, and they are items Hendershot says need to be disposed of properly.

“It's just really important that we take the first step and recycle that,” said Hendershot.

The popular brewing company has been using biodegradable to-go containers for years now, but they're hoping this new way of recycling will help them reduce their carbon footprint that much more.

“Anyone that recycles, it helps us be able to maintain our landfills and have our landfills exist a little longer,” said Rick Beckner, owner of Commercial Refuse Service.

If recycling leftover materials isn’t enough already, Hendershot says they hope to recycle even more in the future and get their entire waste level down to zero.

“That includes the food waste,” said Hendershot. “The next step we will be working on is trying to get rid of that food waste to a farmer, a rancher that can then compost and use it for other uses.”

Come May 1, Kannah Creek plans to expand to another location near the Riverside Parkway.

They're hoping that by beginning the first steps of the new recycling program at their current location, it will make for an easier implementation of the program at the new location.
