K-12 Aviation Program Orders Flight Simulator

ASPEN, Colo- A new privately funded aviation program affiliated with the Aspen School District is moving forward now that supporters have raised enough money to order a $100,000 flight simulator.

Assistant Superintendent Julia Roark's husband, pilot Greg Roark, has been fundraising for the program since 2011, which aims to get kids excited about science, math and engineering.

The aviation program has three phases of development. The Aspen Daily News reports $25,000 needed to be raised for phase one to provide classroom lessons, and $115,000 was needed in the second phase to get the simulator. The third phase would launch a flight academy, which would require buying an aircraft that could cost around $350,000.

Private donors have contributed enough for the first two phases.

The simulator was ordered Friday.
