DENVER (AP)- The judge in the Colorado theater shootings case says James Holmes can be medicated for interviews by psychiatrists, but only if he pleads not guilty by reason of insanity.

Judge William Sylvester writes in a document released Monday that Holmes could also be given a polygraph examination, as part of an evaluation to determine if he was legally insane at the time of the deadly shooting spree.

Holmes is scheduled to enter a plea Tuesday.

His lawyers have objected to the use of medication during questioning by psychiatrists saying it would violate his rights.

Twelve people were killed and 70 others were injured in the July 20 attack at an Aurora movie theater, in which authorities say James Holmes is responsible for.
