Bill Would Count Job Experience for College Credit

Grand Junction - Completed college credits in exchange for work experience: that's what one Colorado lawmaker said he wants to enforce in Colorado schools. Republican Representative Tom Massey of Colorado proposed a bill which would get Colorado colleges to accept job credit for previous related work experience. Massey said it would allow people to graduate sooner and save students money.

"We're learning how to perform, and I'm a vocal performance student. If we're learning how to do that, and I've been doing that since I was 16, you know, playing at local bars or anywhere, really, I think that should count as something," said Colorado Mesa University student Kyle Roberts.

A non-traditional student, meaning over the age of 25, said he isn't able to give his full attention to work while being a student, and therefore he said is "idling" his way through. "I had ten years of experience doing a lot of this stuff, so I'm really good at what I used to do. Now that I'm back at school, it'd be nice to have some of that math courses that I wouldn't have to take or computer program courses that I wouldn't have to worry about that' be great," explained Aaron Troxel.

The students said they want to have school has a backup security plan, but said nothing compares to the real world experience.

"I wouldn't have to be here as long as I intended to, so I could get on with my music career and start touring."

Troxel said with the school being allowed to use his credits for his prior work experience it'd "save me time and money, and time is money."

The proposal is currently postponed while Representative Massey works on the amendments.
