Jefferson County Teens Create 'Jessica's Angels' Group

ARVADA, Colo.- The community in Jefferson County is still mourning the loss of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway.
As a way to honor the slain girl, local high school students want to make sure that tragedy isn't repeated and that younger children are protected.
KCNC in Denver caught up with the students, who have launched their own organization called "Jessica's Angels."
Members of the group are patrolling the neighborhoods around elementary schools and walking together in pairs for safety purposes.
They say they are not there to physically intervene in any situations, but they are there simply to provide an extra set of eyes as students make their way home.
The effort started out as a Facebook page that has now collected more than 2,700 “likes.”
Donations came pouring in, and purple T-shirts were designed and distributed to interested students at surrounding Jefferson County high schools.
The district is not officially on board, citing safety and security concerns.
However, because the program is more of a community watch with parents involved, it will not intervene.
