Ivan Lawyer and Kirk Firko No Longer Employees of Colorado State Patrol

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Colorado State Patrol has parted ways with two of its staff members who were involved in the 2010 shooting death of an unarmed man.

Sgt. Jeff Goodwin with the CSP says that troopers Ivan Lawyer and Cpl. Kirk Firko had a meeting with CSP officials Tuesday, and in that meeting "separated employment with the Colorado State Patrol."

Goodwin could not confirm why both men are no longer working for the CSP, and also could not confirm whether it was a mutual decision.

The two officials went to Jason Kemp's home in 2010 while investigating a traffic accident.

Lawyer said that during a struggle, he shot Kemp because he saw him raise his arm and thought he had a weapon.

Kemp later died.

Lawyer went to trial and a jury found him not guilty of charges including negligent homicide and felony trespassing.

After Lawyer's ruling, the Mesa County district attorney dropped charges against Firko.
