An Islamic song? Good God don't be stupid and place the teacher on administrative leave. What a fool she is!
Bonnie Allison said on Tuesday, Feb 14 at 7:43 PM
If we are taking GOD out of schools eg no Christmas, why on earth should we have any other religion? If we cannot have Christmas Carols why should you allow Islamic songs. Our Pledge of allegiance is also being changed because it has GOD in it. We will all pay in the end for taking GOD out of everything after all this is why our country was founded.

If it was a Christian song, they would not be standing behind the teacher and the song. This song is being allowed on the basis that it promotes "diversity" which is politically correct to do. I don't have a problem with the song being sung, however I do have a problem with the glaring double standard where different beliefs are treated differently.
Anonymous said on Tuesday, Feb 14 at 8:23 PM
If this is "about bringing diversity to the students and showing them other things that are out there" as spokesman Jeff Kirtland said, then hey, why not do something from ICP or Marilyn Manson? Apparently the teacher is open to anything! SO glad I don't live in this po-dunk town anymore!!!

Good Old Diversity strikes again - Let's go full steam ahead - Please let me know when I can hear a children's choir in our public schools sing "Jesus Loves Me, This I Know?"

Wonder what the FAITH of this music teacher is? Diversity is NOT strength. It is weakness. That is what the NWO wants...division. This music teacher needs to be disciplined...

I like diversity. Let's practice 'diversity' in the selection of the new choir director that will be hired to replace this ignorant piece of 'diversity laden political correctness'! oakland can have the twit back. OUR Children and Students do not need to be INDOCTRINATED into the PERSONAL AGENDAS of goofball, incompetent union members.

So what song of praise would have been acceptable to the child? Jehovah? Elohim? Yahweh? Enlil? Zeus? They are all the same as Allah. Be sure to say 'amen' after your prayers tonight James. To honor the Egyptian god Amun-Ra. While you give praise for the sins Jesus absolved you of....just like the 30 some other sun gods who were born of virgin and resurected after three days.

How is it "right" for a single student to disrupt the activities of an after-school club? That student is not required to participate; why should his discomfort with other religions or cultures or languages prevent other students from learning something?
SueLyn said on Tuesday, Feb 14 at 11:57 PM
How ODD. People scream about the (non-existent) separation of church and state, but when someone mentions the impropriety of sing a religious hymn of a religion that demands all non-believers be either killed or enslaved, the real nut-cases crawl out of the woodwork. If all you 'anonymous' type are so enamored with moslem hymns, start you own choir and charge admission.
Anonymous said on Wednesday, Feb 15 at 12:15 AM
a krex joke of story and waste of time
CrustyOldGeezer said on Wednesday, Feb 15 at 12:16 AM
Just as an aside 'anonymous'.... Unless you are a devote moslem, in their country you would either be dead or a slave. Why is it ok for them to practice slavery, while you condemn this nation for the mistakes of our past that ended 150 years ago? And why do you not have a problem with the moslem practice murdering anybody of any other Faith? YOU have some serious emotional issues that need to be seen to by a professional. Perhaps a nice Jewish Psychiatrist could help you. Maybe a survivor of Auschwitz?
Fellow Educator said on Wednesday, Feb 15 at 12:50 AM
Actually, I am having difficulty thinking of a Muslim nation that currently practices slavery. Maybe we should stick to the facts. This story is about how students should or shouldn't learn about the world that they were brought into.
Brandon Mills said on Wednesday, Feb 15 at 1:41 AM
Neither I, or the student that said this have anything against Islam. The reason he was uncomfortable about it was because the translated words state, "There is no god but Allah." There is pretty much a double standard because nobody is allowed to mention anything about the Christian God at school, yet it is okay for them to teach a song that not only praises another religion's god, but goes against what many students believe by saying the Christian God or the god or gods of whatever religion they believe don't exist.
Adam Mighall said on Wednesday, Feb 15 at 2:58 AM
The idea that the performance of this song either promotes the Islamic faith or devalues the Christian one is a rather limited mindset, to be perfectly honest. I, along with many others I'm sure, view this as art and, like all forms of art, see it as a reflection of society rather than a doctrine of what to believe. The moment we buy into the fallacy that art should be censored in order to protect our beliefs is the moment we lock ourselves in cages and view the 'outside' world with cynicism and disdain. Let the audience make up their own minds and let's not, for god's sake, censor something because of our own insecurities. When I listen to this music (and I'm a white anglo saxon by the way) I hear a beautiful melody and see a rather talented group of singers. Good job all of you and keep up your wonderful work!
Lisa Coulson said on Wednesday, Feb 15 at 4:17 AM
Singing both religious and secular music from different cultures is one of the best ways students can learn about different cultures, you don't have to be Muslim to sing and appreciate an Islamic song just like you don't need to be Buddhist to enjoy Chinese food. It is a cultural experience, something many of those who have responded here seem to have lacked in their own education based on some of the ignorant comments. This is nothing new, public school choral programs have used a wide range of religious and secular music for decades and any of those responding about how Christian songs wouldn't be defended have clearly NEVER sang in a school choir because probably about half of the songs school choirs sing are Christian religious songs from traditional Latin choral pieces to Gospel spirituals. I find it very troubling that a student is taking issue specifically with an Islamic song, as I'm sure the choir's repertoire includes a wide range of music from several different cultures.
Anonymous said on Wednesday, Feb 15 at 7:12 AM
If you can't sing a Church Hymn, Then you shouldn't be able to sing a Muslim hymn either.
Lisa Coulson said on Wednesday, Feb 15 at 7:40 AM
To anonymous: Your comment would make sense if hymns and Christian religious songs were banned from public school choirs. This is most certainly NOT the case, public school choirs include a great deal of religious music which is exactly why it is necessary to include music from other faiths and cultures in public school choral curriculum since the vast majority of material available to Western choral programs is Christian religious music. Without the inclusion of religious music school choirs would be extremely limited in their choices, so school choirs are able to include religious material in ways other public school classrooms and subject can't. For every 1 Muslim or Jewish song a public school choir sings they probably have 5 or 6 Christian religious songs in their repertoire. Maybe actually take a look at the repertoire of a public school choir before assuming that hymns are not allowed.

The biggest problem with liberals, is the fact that they choose their enemys as their friends because they don't want to.. "offend". That shows the liberals don't understand the true ideaology of the enemy, they choose to fear them and be politically correct. That is where the enemy wants them to be, in fear, fear brings captivity, captivity brings enslavement. Islam is full of slavery, the MSM won't show that because the MSM is politically Correct. You want truth? don't depend on the MSM to bring it to you, they also fear the enemy.

dearest fellow educator/anonymous, It is obvious that you knowledge of history is a bit lacking in reality. MOSLEMS worked with a few african tribes to attack neighboring villages, killing every person that did not meet the minimum standards of the SLAVE TRADE. The arab moslems got the slaves and the conquering tribe got the lands and the rest of the spoils. Most of the slaves went to Europe, with a fair percentage coming to the Americas, both North and South as well as the Caribbean Islands. When the Western world did away with slavery, the moslem arab slave trade did not just simply die away. And yes, the slave industry is alive and well to this day. To believe otherwise is dangerously stupid.

I seem to recall a story in the bible of three guys (shadrach, meshach and abednego)who refused to worship another God. Any Christian (meaning they believe the Bible as God's word and practice it)would do the same thing James did. The school should not support ANY program that causes ANY student to sing ANY song that makes them sin (according to their religion). It's not school appropriate to pray in school or sing songs about drugs and domestic violence, so why is it fine to say everyone else's religion is wrong?

I want to commend James for speaking his conviction and not strapping on a bomb to do so. The Bible says, "Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, O Lord". With that in mind, then yes, it does matter what comes out of the mouth of a believer in Jesus. James has just exercised his right to freedom of speech and notice he did not force anyone to stand with him.

So the tables are now turned on Christians, and they're getting a taste of their own medicine. James Harper is having to deal with what atheists have had to deal with for years. He's doing the right thing, and I hope that this is an eye-opening experience for all people who try to defend the inclusion of any religious songs in public schools.

Here is another example of hysterics, ignorance and publicity seeking. The real question is, did Mr. Harper participate in the October 12th concert at the First United Methodist of GJ, or the November 30th, December 1-3 and December 13th concerts at The First Church of The Nazarene concerts? Because if memory serves me correctly, there was no mention of these concerts in the media other than to announce the schedule. Mr. Harper claims that he does not want to "come across as a bigot or a racist", then maybe his only fault is ignorance and publicity seeking. This is a very good example of uneducated individuals using potentially inflammatory issues to self-promote. Very disturbing indeed. I challenge anyone that disagrees to research this issue and come to an educated opinion. Obviously people want their words to be heard, but are not confident enough in their convictions to allow anyone to know who they are judging from the number of 'Anonymous' postings. Good job people.

Good for the teacher attempting to enlighten students to culture outside their protected realm.

Stop the double standard. Don't be a hypocrate this idea of christian or nothing is wrong. America was founded on freedom of religon. Either ban ALL religous related music from schools or allow All different kinds of religous music (Native American, taoism, budhism, jewish, islamic, muslim, hindu, rastafari, ect.)What's wrong with cultural diversity? If you want a christian only music atmosphere, then put your child in private school. I respect and support everyones right to worship as they choose, even if it differs from my beliefs, but I do not condone one group forcing their beliefs on another. Include them all or ban them all.

I find it very interesting that we should not say Merry Christmas but happy holidays because we may offend someone. We should not sing Christmas carols because someone of another faith might be offended. The schools no longer have Christmas or Easter break but winter and spring break because someone might be offended. The students in school cannot openly pray or otherwise console other students in a manner that might be associated with Christianity because they might offend someone. Still the school approves and encourages students to sing and perform and Islamic prayer by which I am not supposed to be offended. Is it any wonder break or any other kind of “dancing” and other unacceptable behavior are occurring in our public schools today? Is it just me or are we very quickly moving from the moral and Christian standards our founding fathers intended for this great nation?

I served a year in Afghanistan and a year in Iraq. I know, first-hand, how women are treated there, how the United States is hated after we have poured billions of dollars into their stinking countries and how they would kill us all of they could - so why do people coddle their religion in the US? The same religion that tells them to kill all of us that are not muslims. This nation has become so politically-correct, that when they do have total rule, you'll regret it - and Shariah law is well on its way in our country. Make no mistake about it. They would be having a fit for a Christian song to be song singing "Jesus is the Only Way". I admire this young man for standing up for what he believes!

Funny how when something with a Christian theme is presented (songs, paintings, statues, etc) in a public venue, there is a great hue and cry about "separation of Church and State" with lawsuits demanding their withdrawal. But when it's a non-Christian issue, it's inevitably defended on the grounds of "diversity." You either believe that the 1st Amendment defines a concept of "separation of Church and State," or you don't, but in the first case, ALL religious items and themes should be banned from public institutions; in the second case, ALL religious items and themes should be allowed in public institutions. I wonder what the principal would say if the choir wanted to sing "Oh Holy Night" at Christmas and a Muslim student objected? I doubt I'd hear a comment defending the song on the principle of "diversity."
John Q said on Wednesday, Feb 15 at 2:55 PM
Well you know, the separation of church and state only applies to Christian faiths and holidays... all part of the progressive 'new normal' for America. Remember that at the polls.
Aaron M Watson said on Wednesday, Feb 15 at 3:00 PM
Separation of Church and State. If the rule applies to one religion it should apply to all. One question needs to be answered by that school district. Would they have allowed a song about God and Jesus to be sung by the choir? If yes then good for them. If no then shame on them for allowing a double standard.

All gods are not equal - There is only One True God and satan believes in One God and trembles at His Name. No other name under heaven where men can be saved but the name of Jesus....so...no - all paths do NOT leave to God, that is just what satan wants you to believe. Doesn't matter how many temper tantrums and names you want to call me - God's Word (The Holy Bible) is true and all men who say opposite are liars. According to Mr. Kirtland, singing praise to Allah is OK since it promotes “diversity”. I guess that diversity does not include Christians or Jews. Any song that praised Christianity or Judaism would cause outrage from Liberals, Progressives and the ACLU. The Koran and Sharia law do not promote “diversity” of beliefs: Koran 5:51 O ye who believe! take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors: They are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily God guideth not a people unjust. Koran 48:29: "Those who follow Muhammad are merciless to the unbelievers but kind to each other." Koran 66:9 O Prophet! make war on the infidels and hypocrites, and deal rigorously with them. Hell shall be their abode! and wretched the passage to it!

I also notice that in the video, they show the spread of Islam with scenes of fire, and at the end there is a flag with a sword on it. That's how the Moors spread into Europe. When the Pope said Islam "is a religion of the sword" Islamists forced him to back pedal under threat of violence.

Why is it okay to sing Christian music but not Islamic. It is nothing more than hypocrisy and ignorance. If people want Islamic songs to be banned then Christian, and every other religious based music must be banned. There shouldn't be a double standard. The BIGGER picture here, is "WHY" in the world---out of all the possible pieces of music ever written for voice---was "that" particular song chosen by the choir director? Student participation in the after-school choir may be "voluntary", but use of a public institution---like the school---and a public employees means taxpayer money is being used to advance an idelogical viewpoint: multiculturalism, and political correctness. The ad ridiculum political promotion of those 2 concepts are detroying the social cohesion of our American society. Despite our President's reluctance to "name" America's enemy in our ongoing War on Terrorism, it is "radical Islam." Would this song have been well-received if performed at Ground Zero on the anniversary of 9-11?

As an alumni of the Vocal Music department of both GJHS and CMU, I have spent my entire musical career so far singing Christian music with religious text. I would have LOVED to have a little bit of diversity in my musical training but studying under a devoutly conservative professor made it impossible for me to get any kind of experience other than Christian music in my schooling. In a world where minorities are so beaten down in public school and in society alike, it seems to me that the ONLY solution to the problem is to teach acceptance and love all people and cultures. Individual people and the music that comes from different cultures are not the perpetrators of terrorism in our nation. Accepting these people is the first step toward a peaceful world. Also, when a school program is voluntary, it seems to me the more appropriate response on the part of this student would be to opt out of singing the song rather than to belittle and restrain everyone else's experiences in choir.
Mom of a men's choir student said on Wednesday, Feb 15 at 7:02 PM
I have a son in this choir. While we are Christian, we also respect other religions. To me, the words of this song are just words unless you intend it to be worship, then it's worship. My son can sing the words without worshiping Allah. He understands the difference. They sang Christian songs at the Christmas program and no one batted an eye. No one has mentioned that one of the other songs they are singing for competition is a Christian song called "Prayer of the Children". The words of this song mentions Jesus. Ms. Wieland gave the kids the option to not sing this song and gave them all the information they needed to make an informed decision. In fact there is at least one other boy who is choosing not to sing this song but he's not making a big deal about it. I respect Mr. Harper for making his own choice in not singing this, but there are 30 other people who voted to sing it because it is a technically challenging song that need to be respected too.

Someone said that Christians and Muslims worship the same God. That is absolutely and 100% false. The God of Judaism and Christianity has no pagan roots or associations whereas Allah was a widely worshiped pagan god of the Arabs long before Mohammed's time, albeit a supreme deity associated with the black stone inside the Ka'baa in Mecca. The actual name of God for Christian Arabs was "Ilah" and pagan Arabs worshiped "al-Lah" (literally mean "the god"), big difference. This "al-Lah" had a wife and three daughters whereas "Ilah" was recited in invocation for Christian Arabs in the religious ceremonies. Mohammed got rid of pagan and Christian ceremonies, forced the followers to convert to Islam and made them worship only the name Mohammed preferred, "al-Lah" which became Allah. The "god" of Islam is not the same as the God of Christianity.

Great job Mr. James Harper!!!!! Marcia Wieland should be fired and the school district members should be recalled or voted out of office ASAP. Separation of church and state goes for ALL religions, or NONE. How could a logical human being say it's not right for us to have a Christmas tree in a school, but it's awesome for a kid to be forced to sing about Allah? This is absolutely despicable.

"there is no other truth except Allah" Does no one realize that "Allahu akbar" and "La'illah illa'ullah" mean 'Allah is great' and 'there is no god but Allah'. These are muezzins' cries and the original phrase of the Qur'an, itself the first part of the shahada, the statement of conversion to Islam. These are affirmations of belief and the statements used by Islamic terrorists. And you want to call Allah the same as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob? By what fruits do you know and see the sameness, when it is those who follow Allah that are willing to kill themselves and as many others as possible to demonstrate their belief? The school should turn itself into a madrassa and make Quranic recitation its curriculum, as is done all over the Islamic world. Just to be thorough. (End ridicule) "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life." Blessed be the name of the Lord, Jesus Christ.

1. Allah is the same God of the Bible. Christians who speak Arabic find the word 'Allah' in the Bibles for God. The one difference is that Muslims do not believe that God is a trinity, so they consider Jesus a prophet, not part of God or God in total. 2. Muslims do not worship another prophet, they do not worship any prophet. 3. If we can sing Christmas songs in public school choirs, there is no objection to singing this one, either. There is nothing objectionable in the lyrics.

I thought the liberal government wants total separation of church and state. No religion brought into a public school. We can no longer sing Christmas songs, Christmas trees (oh excuse me, but we can have a Holiday Tree). I commend James for standing up for his principles. He shows how much smarter he is than his choir teacher. I hope his grades won't suffer because of his beliefs.

As a parent of a GJHS choir student, I have seen them perform several varities of music. I myself am Christian and I don't have any problem with my child singing something like this. If you have ever meet the choir teacher you would know what an outstanding teacher she is and how much the students respect her. If you would take the time to attend a music performace you would know they usually sing things from different countries. When they do sing Christan songs, why is it no one is complaining from different religions about it? Bottom line you child should kearn about the world, if they don't like it, they have the choice to not sing it. Stand up for what you beleive in, but don't force your opinion on everyone else!

I would like to set a few things straight for those who assume this is an assault on Christianity. Get your facts right before attacking the district, the teacher, and schools in general. Ms. Weiland’s Holiday Extravaganza concerts are full of Christian music. Christmas decorations can be found in the commons, library, and classrooms. Every morning, students stand to recite the Pledge, including “One nation under God.” Young Life openly promotes and recruits on campus. A Christian program promoting abstinence advertises through posters in the hallways.Fellowship of Christian Athletes meets at lunch. Students wear t-shirts with Bible quotes. Parts of the Bible are required reading for some classes. The district supports all of these activities. I am a Christian, but I understand that I live in a country with religious freedom. That means diversity. What makes terrorists dangerous? A lack of tolerance and a belief that everyone should believe the same thing in the same way.

Some of you people are intolerable. There's a reason why the Western Slope has the stigma of being rednecks. The kid had every right to choose to opt out of the performance. But some of you just can't wait to fire another teacher. If you guys are so concerned about education, why didn't you put your money where your mouth is on election day? Its great to talk about education when it doesn't cost you anything am I right? This kid is going to be a Fox News celebrity and all of you people who have never left the county will suck it up like a sponge. You all need lives. She gave the kids an opt out option and stated clearly that the reasoning for using the song was that it was challenging, and popular around the world. But I guess if it doesn't come on KEKB you don't know about it. If you're going to judge every Muslim on the actions of extremists, then I guess you have to own the KKK and the Westboro Babtist church as well. Naw, that's not convenient. Lets just fire teachers.

My question is, where are the atheists and the ACLU in this case? Now adays, we can find hundreds of examples of offense and lawsuits by such secular forces whenever the mere mention of God, Jesus, or anything even hinting at Christianity is spoken at a public school or any other government venue. As I don't personally have a problem with songs performing or studies exploring other cultures and religions, what bothers me is when one faith alone is targeted for removal and discrimination in this post-constitutional nation while all others, like Islam, Buddhism, and the now-recognized faith of secular humanism are allowed and encouraged by the very public officials and "civil libertarians" who are at war with Christianity.

It makes no difference what the director's intent was ,the song violates the seperation of church and state/public institutions. This country is great for going after christians but it can turn a blind eye to a Muslim inserting his beliefs in a song. The director should be repremanded but the school principal should be fired along with everyone who voted not to stop this. This is a country where everyone is supposed to be treated equally but obviously not in this state. And Colorado wonders why it has so much trouble with it's youth. You spout one set of standards but practice another and these students see it and reject what they are supposed to learn in school. And here i thought California led the way in talking out of both sides of the mouth . Colorado is catching up fast.

It is a shame so many "Christians" here do not understand their own faith and what Jesus said we're to do. "I feel as if singing music is accepting of other religions, which any Christian would be." "...many paths, one God" Jesus taught us to go out into the world and preach the "Good News" and that those who turned us away, made us unwelcome, wouldn't open the door...we are instructed to shake the dust from our sandles. Leaving an unbeliever with the dust from our sandles is not accepting of other religions. It says we will not waste our time on them once the "Word" has been delivered to them. We are to accept that it is their choice and we are to move on to bring the "Good News" to someone else. We are not to go in and party on down with another religion or false god.
Cathy said on Thursday, Feb 16 at 7:46 AM
We can say what we like, but believe me every devout Muslim knows that the first of the five pillars that all good Muslims state are those same words that are the cause of objection in the song. Muslims in Arab countries like the Sudan have been beheaded for converting to Christianity (there's tolerance for you), but if they will just state, "There is no God but Allah", they will be let go. Yet, due to our lack of knowledge, our children do not know what they are carelessly tossing aside.

The student is wrong in this case. He's free to quit as he sees fit, but to claim that the PUBLIC school choir singing the song is equivalent to "making a Muslim choir sing a Christian song," like another article said he stated, is absurd. This is NOT a "Christian choir," this is a PUBLIC SCHOOL choir, and I would HOPE that songs of many religions would be sung, incliding Christian songs, which I read WERE included, Jewish songs, and songs of other religions. If he claims to be against the Muslim song, he should have taken offense to the inclusion of the Christian songs too. It sounds like he's looking for his 15 minutes of fame in an inappropriate, whiney way.

We should be singing Christian songs in our nation because we stand for the Christian principles that our country was founded on. Thank you James for standing up for what you believe. We need ADULTS in this country to do the same. There should be no question about whether or not we sing Christian songs - it should be an automatic. It is part of our country's foundation. James is an example of the freedoms we all enjoy! Shame on that teacher for even teaching our kids such a song!!! Bilingual Muslim children need state funded Muslim schools with bilingual Muslim teachers as role models during their developmental periods. There is no place for a non-Muslim child or a teacher in a Muslim school. Muhammad – may God grant him peace and blessings – confirmed the teachings of those before him, namely Moses and Jesus. He brought unity, where there was division. He brought peace, where there was war among the Arabian tribes of the time. He brought order, where there was chaos. All this could not be done by a man, without the grace of God. Muhammad had no military training before he commanded an army in the field. Muhammad was the most perfect of all humans. He did not love war but rather thought of it as a last resort. Muslims believe

You don't need the ACLU to sue, you can reach out to organizations like FIRE or the Thomas More Law Center, who will go to bat for you. You must deny the leftists & Islamists the ability to subvert the constitution, because it is unconstitutional, illegal for the district to use tax dollars to pay for and promote the imposition of an Islamic prayer song in your schools or any where on city, county, state or federal property. It's an example of a desire to insult the US by affording Islam the status of state religion.

It amazes me the ignorance and hatred on this comment board, not to mention the blatant twisting of facts. First and foremost high school choirs sing Jesus music on a regular basis that is a good majority of the music sung in Choir, I know this from personal experience participating in every choir in High School and College. Second God and Allah are derived from the same word. Third this Nation was not founded upon Christianity, almost all of the founding fathers were Liberal Deists, not Christian, that is a historical fact. Thomas Jefferson rewrote the bible taking Jesus and all miracles out of the bible he was not Christian. This ignorance is the same as saying that Choirs are not allowed to sing Mozart because he was German and therefor a Nazi sympathizer. This entire thing has risen out of intolerance, hatred, ignorance and bigotry. That is what is wrong with this nation, not singing an Islamic song.

First, it is NOT a fact that most founding fathers were liberal deists. That's liberal propaganda. Read John Adams' biography. Muslims cry "Death" to anyone they object to, so obviously there were no Muslims in the choir. Separation of church and state is NOT in the constitution. It says very simply "Congress shall make no law". States can do what they want.

If this would have been a Christian song with praises to God, then the ACLU would have gotten involved, it would have been a messy situation for this school and teacher, and the song would be pulled immediately. But since it is Muslim, everyone will break their backs to make sure it is shoved down the throats of students, willing or not. This double standard is blasphemous and wrong. I just think it is a double standard if it is about diversity & diversity in religion then how come the use of the word God is not allowed & also why don't sing a christian song. At my sons high school graduation the Senior girl who was the class valedictorian had to sneak a simple prayer into her speech. The whole auditorium applauded & appreciated her words & anyone who did not simply did not have to stand or clap. Christians are being squelched at every corner from showing their faith. So why should it be different for Islam?

A lot of ignorant comments here. Allah is the term for GOD in Arabic. Mohammed was influenced by Jews and Christians and believed that Jesus was a PROPHET of God (Allah, Yahweh), but not the Messiah. Read the Koran, the Old Testament including the Jewish books left out of it and the New Testament and you will see great similarities between all of them. It is the ignorance and intolerance practiced by some in ALL THREE faiths that is the biggest problem in our world today.

Intolerance is pullling this country apart. Even the headline is meant to provoke. According to the article, the song isn't meant for worship and the only thing that "forced" this young man to quit is his own intolerance. What ever happened to freedom in this country? Freedom of or from religion is guaranteed in the constitution. Would people be upset if or would the student be upset if the choir was singing a song from a Catholic hymnal? Just stop it! Intolerance is what is killing America!

I totally support James Harper's right to stand by his beliefs. Frankly, I am surprised more parents are not questioning this religious song with the political climate being as it is right now. That being said - apparently I can now shout MERRY CHRISTMAS without getting a sideways glance. So here goes MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

I SEE ALLAH IN HALLELUIAH: Many Muslims Sing Songs about the Love of Jesus Christ; Even when they go to Church. I am a Christiam Muslim Jew! How is that? Am I worshiping another G_D? About: A Colorado high school student quit the school choir after an Islamic song containing the lyric “there is no other truth except Allah” found its way into the chorus. James Harper, a senior at Grand Junction High School in Grand Junction, put his objection to singing “Zikr,” a song written by Indian composer A.R. Rahman, in an email to Mesa County School District 51 officials. “I don’t want to come across as a bigot or a racist, but I really don’t feel it is appropriate for students in a public high school to be singing an Islamic worship song,” Harper told KREX-TV. “This is worshipping another God, and even worshipping another prophet … I think there would be a lot of outrage if we made a Muslim choir say Jesus Christ is the only truth.”

I would like to hear from the rest of the quire who didn't quit and had no issue with singing a non-Christian song. I respect this young man for standing up for his beliefs and not wanting to participate, but he shouldn't expect everyone to bend to his will either. As for the ACLU bashing, it is justified, there is a double standard with them, but that doesn't mean the rest of us have to have equally shaky motives. I applaud thos of you who have the reading comprehension to see this for the non-story that it should be. (Sabrina, Jhink, Former GJ)

CONGRATULATIONS and applaud for this gutsy young man James Harper who made a brave stand against the tide of Islam that is sweeping across America and many other nations of the world. To make a public stand for his faith when it means going against that which is 'popular and permissible' takes GUTS and this young man has demonstrated just that. Even a blind man could see that this song is about 'tolerance' and praise for the Muslim faith. An earlier writer (Jisbond) said " I am a Christiam Muslim Jew! How is that?" Well it's simply not possible - either you are a Christian or you're not - and James Harper has clearly demonstrated who and what he is. Have a look at the comments by 'the educators' and see where they are coming from - it's rather obvious. So sack the teacher - and parents - please stand up for your children and your country! Thank you James and may God (YHWH - the one true God) bless you, you stand out above the crowd.

I find it dissapointing that our city is being torn into two over a persons opinion. Last night this controversial story made it onto Denver news and the seperation continues. I feel that as a country our religious freedom is being attacked. Everyones tollerance has taken a step back from all sides, we need to call down and agree that this is none of our business and it should have never gotten th...is big. As for the students approach on the whole issue it think its his way of getting attition and everyone is giving in to this attempt. Even me. Yes it is a fact that every single high school in America will sing religious songs, and yes it will not be only one specific religion. In my choir everyone is accepted for who they are and what religion they may be. This student is in my choir and should know this, but apparently decided to "forget" how tolerant we are in this department. This is my opinion on the matter. Goodbye
Fact! said on Thursday, Feb 16 at 3:29 PM
Fact: two other students were not comfortable singing this song. They approached the teacher about this themselves. The teacher didn't have a problem with this and asked if they wanted to play percussion while the other men in the choir sang the song. They boys who had a problem with this agreed. This is what the student should have done. Did I mention that the student in question showed up to hardly any rehearsals ??

This is very destructive and we in no way should tolerate this. This is not why or how America was formed. This is not a cultural thing or an educating thing. This is blasphemy to the highest. If we let this creep in in the name of tolerance or whatever, we will soon be lost as a Christian Nation. We should outcry about this. Just think what happened when one bad woman took bible and prayers out of our schools. WE MUST NOT TOLLERATE THIS.......EVER! This would be our destruction.

The Politically Liberal (PC) position on religious freedom allows Islamic religious practices and observances, even installing footbaths in public universities; but Christian religious practices and observances are prohibited "because they might offend someone". For Islam, "we need to be tolerant and celebrate diversity", but for Christianity "that violates separation of church and state" (which is not true; the 1st amendment only prohibits the government from forcing the public to give money to a state sanctioned church). The young man is simply exercising his freedom to refrain from practicing someone else's religious observances.

Want to know why those who support the choir director or the song aren't posting their names-fear of backlash. Too many comments here are from people who do not know the whole story. 1)Christian songs are NOT forbidden-the sole fundraiser for the choir department is a CHRISTmas program performed at a Christian church. They also perform Jewish songs, Native American songs and music from other cultures. 2)They do say the Pledge everyday, including "Under God". If a student does not want to participate, fine, they don't say it. 3)To me, this issue isn't about religion, it's about free speech. I have a problem with one child making this hard for the rest of the choir and the director. It's hard not to be bitter about this when my son comes home and tells me about the comments he's hearing at school about this whole scenario. God is alive and well at GJHS. Some words on religions as to unite people. The ultimate of religious experience is in turning one's senses inward via meditation such reality applies to all religions each and every one / the ultimate is experience. On pc search put words of peace there be a selection of videos where Prem Rawat talks explains meditation /of turning the senses inward giving such spiritual experience one is granted a clarity of understanding /such a clarity that all one's questions answered. People seem to forget that while this young man should be commended for standing up for his beliefs by using his right of free speech, he is taking that same right away from the other members of the choir who made an informed decision to sing this song. My son was given the exact same information and he is choosing to stand behind the decision of the choir and Ms. Wieland and we, as parents, are standing with our child. This isn't really about religion, it's about the right to speak freely about your beliefs. This is America people-it won't hurt you to have an open mind. Not only was James staying true to the Lord and to his convictions, he also stayed a 'light' to clear up the NEA "endarkenment" teachings and philosophies, for God said Jesus was 'the', not 'a', way to Him and eternal life. He said He is 'the' truth, not 'a', truth. So James gave everyone clarity on that by being loyal to 'the truth'--the Lord Jesus. He is not 'allah' either: "Romans 9:7 makes it very clear:"neither because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children (of God): but, 'In Isaac shall thy seed be called"-referring back toGenesis 17:20-21, in the passage about Ishmael and Isaac, making it clear that 'the promise' of salvation through god's Son Jesus (Who isn't a prophet of Mohammed)--was to the seed of Isaac. So thanks, James for caring where folks are going to spend eternity as well as strengthening you brethren.

Hamza Kashgiri would tell you said on Friday, Feb 17 at 10:21 AM
The word "zikr" means remembrance, specifically remembrance and thanks to Allah in the Muslim religion. In most forms of Islam, the Zikr (sometimes spelled Dhikr) is performed as a part of each salah, or obligatory prayer. There are five salahs each day and others for special occasions. For the Sufi, the Zikr is much more important, as it is central to their practice. That means the choir isn’t simply singing an “upbeat, rhythmic song (that) combines dancing with drums.” THEY ARE PERFORMING A MUSLIM PRAYER RITUAL! That you,(GJHS parent)in your ignorance, are standing by your UNINFORMED decision is sad. This revelation is the heart of the practice of Zikr namely, "there is no reality except the Reality of Allah." Look up Hamza Kashgiri. Then look up muslim honor killings in the U.S. Kudos Carolyn D. And a question for you, do you think that a bible study group could meet in that public school, or would the false separation clause kick in?

Hang in there Christian soldier youth! however, there is a time to re-group I believe and I'm thinking public schools are a total loss now. I've been 'in it' and watching from a homechool distance for decades. This is indeed their FORM OF JUSTICE! And by any other name, it still smells rotten my friend! This choir woman is indoctrinating her students in that religion and unknown to them, as they are ignorant with ignorant parents, lulling them into participating in a religious act central and OBLIGATORY to the muslim religion. The verdict was YES / his basic rights were being abused. One should not be put into such an situation that James was placed. Now that he has done so, it is up to us to hold those that would punish him accountable for doing so. There is, however, a religious bent to this story as the choir teacher is duping students into reciting muslim obligatory prayers. This is UNCONSTITUTIONAL, and is a greater offense to James' rights, along with all of the dupes singing the Zikr. The translation was sent home, and parents approved of it? Yikes. Folks, I read a different discussion about this story, and in it some folks insisted that Jews, Christians and Muslims all worship the same "God". I could not stay silent about that, so here are some facts pertaining to those comments: “Allah” has no son, (Sura 23.91 and 25.2) and therefore cannot possibly be the father of Jesus Christ. In fact, Islam teaches that placing anyone (or anything) on a level of parity (or partnership) with “Allah” is in fact blasphemous and worth of capital punishment. “Allah” and the one true God of the Bible are not one and the same. Allah also refers to himself as “deceptive” and “the best of all deceivers” (Sura 3.54). This is also directly contradictory to the holy, sinless nature of the Lord of Hosts, the one true God of the Christian faith (who is elaborated upon in detail in the Bible, the Holy Word of God). “Allah” and the one true God of the Bible are not one and the same. As for those of you who say Christians are bigotts, what about those who boom those who are of their religion, and kill them becasue they dont do as they ask. I love all people black, red, muslum, hindu, and all. God loves everyone, and if Jesus Christ can forgive why cant we. Remember he died for us, would you.

That is what is great about this country!!!! If the boy didn't feel comfortable singing this song then he has the right to quit the choir. If people don't want to hear the choir sing this song don't go to the performance. I feel the same way about people who don't like the Christians. I respect your right to believe any thing you want. Please respect my right to worship as I choose and if you don't like that don't bother to be around me!!!!!!! If you don't like the nativity scene turn your head!!! Simple... You all came here for religious freedom, n ow practice it.....

To the idiot who thinks this is ok. Yes some choirs in public schools have done Jewish and Christian songs over the years. However, a Jihadist song? Come now. You would next have a song praising Hitler? Yes I called you an idiot - or are you a politician for the political correctness. The "song" was one for conversion. The "Shahadah" is recited to affirm the SUBMISSION of the individual to the "faith". This was not Dreidal nor Onward Christian Soldiers. Geesh get a grip. To the one who said she was married to a Muslim. I'm sure your husband is secular and not of the jihadist mindset that we are now seeing everywhere. If he wants to call Israel "Palestine" and claim that Jerusalem is not Jewish, etc. (Yes I am Jewish) then so much for being non-secular.

dear William Wallace/ you're so 'helpful' or I know you probably intended to be; HOWEVER I have EVERYthing I need already: God/Jesus Who lives in me-His Holy Spirit resides within those who are His-who've been born again. He promised to teach and guide us-His sheep.I've found Him faithful and with me in over 50 years; He speaks to me through His Word, the Holy Bible and therefore I am protected from 'false teachers' therefore--and there are many--many claim falsely His Name even; So we need to read it but unless we have His Spirit living in us, we won't be able to understand it and have His mind. I hope you'll meet Him someday for Jesus fully let folks know He IS GOD. You need Him and I pray you come to know Him soon.

Muhammad: The false prophet of Islam was a child molester The so called prophet of Islam married a 6 year old and had sex with her when she was 9 years old. Here are some Islamic references that prove that Muhammad was a child molester pervert who liked little girls: Narrated ‘Aisha:that the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage (had sex) when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death). Bukhari 7. 62. 64 ‘A’isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported: Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) married me when I was six years old, and I was admitted to his house when I was nine years old. Truly that song not suitable for public schools, I heard it. How they selected this one for the students? That school is totaly wrong in this case. As a school for the public they cannot simply select religious songs and allow students to sing it, it looks easy for them to say if they dont like they dont have to, Then what is the purpose of being a public school. At the same time they also cannot ask an islam student to sing church prayers because its against islam.

Stop the World, I want to get off. I've heard such idiocy with what I've read here. "You don't have to be a Buddhist to like Chinese food?" (what a stupid comment, Lisa) "Adam, it might be beautiful music to your ears, but not the part to praise Allah, that is against all belief in the Christian Faith." Jeff: "Protest too much?" We are commanded to believe in NO OTHER GOD. There is but one God and that's Jesus who came in the flesh and returned to the Father, There are three who bare witness, The Father, the son and the Holy Ghost AND These THREE are ONE. Your heart tells you this is truth, not school books. All you who point out all the other gods, there are no other Gods. They may use the Allah type word, but it means nothing because there are many false gods who claim to be GOD! The Devils know there is but ONE GOD and they tremble from the knowledge.

I would say that James Harper has done more to "educate" us in the area of cultural diversity by questioning and bringing this situation to light. I have researched the issues from all sides so as to form an educated opinion regarding the subject/issue. I suspect that would not have happened if I was handed the music and told a short summation about the song. Maybe the district should offer James a teaching position...

JASON B....you said it best to understand the difference to those who claim Allah is god: “Allah” has no son, (Sura 23.91 and 25.2) and therefore cannot possibly be the father of Jesus Christ. “Allah” and the one true God of the Bible are not one and the same. Allah also refers to himself as “deceptive” The Lord of Hosts, is the one true God of the Christian faith (who is elaborated upon in detail in the Bible, the Holy Word of God). “Allah” and the one true God of the Bible are not one and the same.

I'm against all religious teachings/songs/tom foolery in schools. But the christian hypocrisy is hilarious. They are always up in arms when someone is trampling on their "religious freedoms" when someone wants to remove the 10 commandments from a public school or object to a christian song being sung by a school choir. But when it's another religion that wants to be afforded the same supposed rights, all I see is outrage. Way to keep it classy and hypocrisy free christians.

I heard that Ms Wieland, the choir director, gave James an ultimatum, either sing Zikr or get out of the choir. If that is true, she should have allowed him to not sing that song and still stay in the choir in respect to his beliefs. My belief is that if people hear words often enough, they will believe them. That's what propaganda does and so I agree with James. Even though it isn't intended as a worship cermony, it'll still affect people's thinking. I suspect our government agrees is why they won't let students sing Christmas Carols. Now, I understand that James quit school because he is receiving threats. I hope the police are looking into that. James isn't hurting anyone, so who is wrong?
OPEN MINDED said on Thursday, Feb 23 at 7:30 AM
For crying out loud! There are so many stories going around who knows what the truth is. The only problem here is that singing a song of any religion in school is wrong! RELIGION AND SCHOOL should be SEPERATE! Just like religion and Goverment should be seperate! And No one religion is the right religion. There are many, and should all be respected. Telling one person how to live is wrong.
Irene said on Thursday, Feb 23 at 1:00 PM
In response to openminded, "no one religion is the right religion" Jesus said "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" We say that because we care for people. Everyone knows killing is wrong (look at Afganistan today)). Caring is loving. We don't force people to believe as we Christians do. We respect peoples decisions after they hear the truth. Our original country felt that government shouldn't interfere with practice of religion. Why did the choir director give James an ultimatum? (James said they did) Why aren't kids allowed to sing Christmas Carols in school? Kids read from the Bible at the founding of our country in school. That's why we became a successful country.
robert donaldson said on Thursday, Feb 23 at 11:11 PM
wooow good turn out of commentary jesus said I AM the way the truth and the life so that leaves the other figures of various worship in the mire. When it comes to truth the devil knows not. so if it is not Jesus in you who is it there abiding within your frame? Praise the God of abraham isaac and jacob they can be looking forward as all followers of the truth can to the coming resurection to eternal life, where we will not hear any singing that worships gods that are both deaf and dead.

"If it was a Christian song, they would not be standing behind the teacher and the song.", "There is pretty much a double standard because nobody is allowed to mention anything about the Christian God at school" You people are idiots. Choirs sing Christian music all the time in pretty much every program. Look at the translation for Ubi Caritas which was sung last year with the same choir director. Ever heard the words Domine Deus in a choir song? - it's Christian. We sing Christmas carols in December ALONG WITH other religious holiday music. Students still recite the pledge of alegiance in schools. Nobody is "getting up in arms" about the Christian influence in public schools. The only reason this is an issue is that it's an Islamic/Muslim song. So don't go around saying that Christianity is suppressed and Islam is being shoved down our throats!
Amanda said on Wednesday, Mar 14 at 7:46 PM
God, you all are idiots. The choir sings Christian songs ALL THE TIME along with other religious pieces. If religion were to be excluded from the choir program entirely, you'd be kicking the Hallelujah Chorus, most Mozart and Bach, and pretty much anything with Latin in it. "Domine Deus, Jesu Christe" ring any bells? The thing is, public school choirs (at least this one) DON'T actually discriminate against Christian music. The ACLU and the 'ignorant' and 'intolerant' liberals have never attacked the teachers/administration over Christianity in the choir program. This is a specific prejudice that you are acting on against the Islamic religion. At least call it what it is! There's a reason for that prejudice and many Americans have it, but these students made an educated decision to include the piece and James had the option of sitting out - other boys with a similar complaint played percussion. Hell, hum along if you don't like the words!

Jake said on Sunday, Mar 25 at 7:38 PM
An Islamic song? That's horrible. I mean, if it were a Christian song, it'd be a completely different story, wouldn't it? I mean, it isn't like Christians bombed our twin towers. I mean, even though radical Christians crusaded through eastern Europe, massacring entire nations, Christianity is clearly the better religion. After all, Christianity was the religion of almost Klu Klux Klan members, and look at how much good they did for our nation! Foolish teacher to think Islamic music was okay to play in class. It's not like religious songs are taught in school because of their educational merit, and that the presence of religious overtones is not considered in the selection process. Songs are not taught in class because they teach unique styles and techniques to students, they are taught because we love Jesus, and every other American should too! Force Christianity upon them!
Anonymous for self preservation said on Wednesday, Mar 28 at 11:46 AM
Why was the song included in the presentation. Tha Koran and Hadiths themselves cannot even agree if music is lawful or not. Muhammad also said: 1.“Allah Mighty and Majestic sent me as a guidance and mercy to believers and commanded me to do away with musical instruments, flutes, strings, crucifixes, and the affair of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance.” 2.“On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will pour molten lead into the ears of whoever sits listening to a songstress.” 3.“Song makes hypocrisy grow in the heart as water does herbage.” 4.“This community will experience the swallowing up of some people by the earth, metamorphosis of some into animals, and being rained upon with stones.” Someone asked, “When will this be, O Messenger of Allah?” and he said, “When songstresses and musical instruments appear and wine is held to be lawful.” 5.“There will be peoples of my Community who will hold fornication, silk, wine, and musical instruments to be lawful ….” — ‘Umdat al-Salik r4

Mart said on Saturday, Aug 4 at 6:09 PM
Ann, since you can't even manage to spell "countrys" correctly within the proper context, perhaps you should refrain from making stupid comments. In case you've forgotten, (or never knew),one of the guiding principals America was founded on is freedom of religion. And no, that doesn't just cover which Christian denomination you belong to, but ALL religion. But Ann, to make you feel better, let's just throw out the Constitution and declare Christianity the only Religion allowed in America! But wait a minute....what happens when the Catholics decide to ban the Baptists? Or the Lutherans decide to bomb the Methodists? 99% of Muslims are peaceful, fairly tolerant people. The fundamentalist Islamic terrorists are no different than the fundamentalist "Christian" terrorists, who decide to kill and maim innocent people by bombing abortion clinics. But shhhh....we don't want to talk about THAT, do we? Honestly, some of you are walking billboards for "You can't fix stupid"!
Kenton said on Monday, Jan 21 at 5:17 AM
If we were to get rid of all non-secular music in our schools, we would be left with very little to sing. Most of the great composers, e.g. Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Purcel, Tallis, Byrd, Britten, Vaughn-Williams, Rachmininoff and many more, composed music for the church. I think the "Separation of Church and State" issue is being taken to extremes. When the country was founded, it was the desire of the founders that no religion would be supported by the government - in other words the government would not say that one particular belief was the belief of the country. I am certain that the music teacher invovled is not advocating that her students become muslim. Let the students sind not only Muslim songs, but also religious songs from other cultures. What is wrong with that? Like I said, I am sure that the pupils are not being told this is what they should believe. Censorship in any form is dangerous.
