17-Month-Old Run over in Tragic Home Accident near Rangely

by Matt Kroschel
by Cori Coffin

Rangely - We have more about an accident that left an infant dead after being run over by a piece of large machinery in Rio Blanco County. According to the Rio Blanco County Sheriff's Office, it happened Sunday afternoon January 29th near Rangely.

Sheriff's officials say dispatch received a call that a 17-month-old child was killed after being run over by a piece of equipment known as a skid-steer.

A mother, father and daughter, along with the infant, were outside when the infant wandered near the machine that his father was operating.

A sheriff's official says the parents of the dead infant have been interviewed, and preliminary evidence points to the death as accidental. However, investigators say they're not ruling anything out at this point.

it was such a big deal to report on this tragic story right away and plaster it all over the internet, but where was your news crew and reporters yesterday to show the support of this community. oh thats not news wothy right. Well Rangely is a great place to live and the love and support they have shown is unbeliveable.

As a member of this community, we are all hear to offer support and understanding. We can stand strong as a community even when the media and folks from different towns that don't know the whole story act like idiots towards us. no one should go through suffering like this and no one should have to feel judged over such a tragic accident, our hearts go out to you.

My prayers are with this family. The media here on the western slope is TERRIBLE along with the INVESTIGATORS that investigate these sorts of tragedies. They are scavengers looking for some way to make a headline and put blame on innocent/hurting families (I know from past experiences with the Post Independent). I hope that both the media and investigators can leave this family ALONE for a while and let them deal with this loss in peace. Little kids are very curious and NO BLAME should be placed on the parents. Instead we should support and comfort them in their time of need. Shame on anyone who is not in agreeance.

This is a tragic loss of a sweet, young, innocent child. This family needs love, support and the power of prayer. This is a time for a community to come together and get through the hard times. This is not the time to point fingers or make accusations. God Bless your family and may you again find peace in your heart.

I know the dad, I work with him. He is a good man. I am discusted by the last line in this story "However, investigators say they're not ruling anything out at this point." That was completely unnecessary and hurtful to the family. Isn't this AMERICA, the USA???? Innocent until proven guilty and not the other way around - I am ashamed of the person who published this article, for putting that out there and doing more harm to this hurting family. I hope they can sleep well at night knowing that they are hurting this grieving family with their accusitory tone. God bless their family, and comfort them in this time of need, and sheild them from people like this who write and say hurtful things. Amen.

Although I am glad you FINALLY changed the headline to read 17-month old ran over in tragic accident instead of father, the damage has already bee done!!!!! MAYBE, your reporters should have to have some sort of ethical training before doing reports on these type of tragedies. Seems like your reporters are WELL known for incidences like this.

My heart aches for this family just so glad it didn't happen in Mesa County as the father would of been hauled off to jail and charged with something, Money is all this county cares about

Man that sucks. Maybe next time they will pay attention and not let their baby run around dangerous equipment. Too bad.

This is my family. They need space. They need people to back off a little. This is a tragedy no one should ever have to face. A mother and a father lost their baby boy, and a little girl lost her baby brother this weekend. The whole family is torn by this. It does not necessarily matter where they were. They were obviously in the wrong place at the wrong time.... It is a tragic accident. These are good people and great parents. This news article is inappropriate and offensive. The writer should have thought about what it would feel like if he were the parent of this child and someone were writing this about him. If you don't know first hand what happened or whats going on... keep your mouth shut. Don't beat on an already beaten and battered person and their family.

In Gods Hands said on Monday, Jan 30 at 5:58 PM

My heart breaks for your family. I am so sorry this happened, please know in your hearts your child is now in Gods hands and will always be your angel. Don't allow people with narrow minds hurt your heart. Those who matter in your world know the love you have for children and this was a tragic accident

What a terrible accident. My heart goes out to the family for their loss. So so sad.

Sorrow said on Monday, Jan 30 at 3:31 PM

I feel pain and sorrow for this family. I have a grandbaby around that age, and I know how active she is. Just points to the fact that yes I agree this was an accident, a tragic accident, as parents with little ones, we always need to keep one eye on them at all times. They are so quick to escape without us even noticing. I don't blame anyone for this. And the article is insensitive. Yes maybe it was the father who didnt even know the child was there, couldnt even hear it due to the machine. Do you not think he feels horrible enough? Put yourself in his shoes. In the Mother or sisters shoes. They are probalby all blaming themselves. I know I would. But no matter what it it was still an ACCIDENT. NOT PREMEDITATED. Please give the family some space. Prays and help in this time of need. Hug your own child today!!!

the headline is typical moron tv "reporting" around here. They don't report as much as they vomit press releases.

Anonymous said on Monday, Jan 30 at 3:00 PM

I think the title to this article is very INSENSITIVE! The father did NOT Run over his child. The equipment did, and it was ACCIDENTAL. The title makes it sound so cruel. This poor father and mother are in deep sorrow at this moment. It could have been title, Tragic Accident, Child hit by front end loader. But NOT Father runs over his child. NEWS Casts, have more compassion in the way your word things when someone loses a loved one. This family is suffering and needs our prayers.

Payattention! said on Monday, Jan 30 at 2:59 PM

If you notice, in the article itself it says where the parents were... This is a tragic ACCIDENT! Do not judge the parents. So sad and praying for the entire family.

This is horrible and sad! Dont go off about where were the parents until you know the whole story and not just this news story.

Sorry said on Monday, Jan 30 at 1:06 PM

I am WTF?!?! and I apologize, my thoughts and prayers are with the family, I have an infant myself and I can't even fathom what I would do if something like this happened. Which is why I asked where they were. How did he get to a place where he would be able to be run over by large machinery? It is such a tragedy. I greatly regret the loss of thier little one.

Tami said on Monday, Jan 30 at 10:12 AM
