DENVER - The Colorado Humane Society is making efforts to ensure no horses go hungry.

Some horse owners are finding it difficult to feed their horses because of the economy and hay shortage.

Horse experts say they're seeing more cases of malnourished horses .

"Horses are coming in through our agency in depleted body conditions when there's a lot of help available in Colorado," said Katrina Schou, Field Services.

The Colorado Humane Society wants horse owners to know that help is available if they can't afford to feed their animals.

The group issued the reminder this week following the death of a neglected mare in eastern Colorado.

A society spokesperson says owners in need can get help from horse rescue group and also get free hay from the state's three hay banks. The banks are located in Evergreen, Parker and Grand Junction.
