Housing Resources Help Residents Obtain & Sustain Homes

MESA COUNTY, Colo.- Owning and renting a home can present its challenges, but what can be even more challenging is having to build a home from the bottom up.
Housing Resources is an organization that helps residents manage their homes, and even build them by themselves.
Erica Ramos who recently just completed that task says it's one of the best things she's ever done.
"It's boosted my self confidence, it's safer and a better neighborhood," said Ramos, mother of four children.
Housing Resources of Western Colorado offers assistance to folks around the valley with specific income guidelines.
"It makes a major impact in homeowners and renters lives," said Eldon Krugman, executive director of Housing Resources.
Part of the program aids those who can't afford to fix old, or broken home appliances.
"It allows people to stay in their homes longer typically," said Krugman.
While more than 6,000 homes receive the necessary replacements; the Self Help Program allows residents to swap some money for manual labor.
"When I built my own house it was a real eye-opener for me, it was so hard," said Anne Baker, account director for the Self Help Program.
Eight to nine families at a time build their homes together, working as a team. They add these hours on-top of their every day jobs.
"Me and my husband both worked, I worked a part-time job, and he worked a full-time job," said Ramos.
After working hard for nine months on their home, the Ramos family was able to move in.
"It's better for my kids, and for my family," said Ramos.
