CMU Students Celebrate Passing of Violence Against Women Act Bill

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Thursday morning, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Violence Against Women Act, renewing a 1994 law.

When signed into law by President Obama, the act will protect women and some men against domestic abuse.

It will provide additional resources to law enforcement and prosecutors to investigate domestic abuse, including on college campuses.

Several students at Colorado Mesa University were ecstatic to hear the bill passed.

"It's really important to the entire group at CMU," said CMU Gay-Straight Alliance President Casey Sadahiro. "It adds in provisions that make colleges and universities accountable for stuff like sexual assault."

The students were also pleased to see the new additions to the bill that including protection for Native Americans, immigrants, and the LGBT community.

The bill was passed by the U.S. Senate two weeks ago and will be signed by President Obama.

In a statement from the White House, President Obama said, "Renewing this bill is an important step towards making sure no one in America is forced to live in fear, and I look forward to signing it into law as soon as it hits my desk."
