Horizon Drive Business District Meets With Business Owners Over Median

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Horizon Drive Business Improvement District met with local business owners to discuss the controversy over installing a median along Horizon Drive from I-70 to G Road.

Board member Brenda Brock said, "When we look at the projections on traffic flow in the future, we feel that left turns become less and less safe as more cars traverse Horizon Drive, so the point of the median was to limit those for pedestrian safety and vehicular safety."

Robert Feeley, owner of Motel 6 along Horizon Drive, says this median would force him to lose 30 percent of his occupancy because anyone looking to stay at his motel would have to drive to G Road and take a traffic circle to drive northbound on Horizon Drive.

"The southern part of Horizon Drive depends mostly on a rubber tire marketing. In other words, people aren't necessarily coming here as a destination, they are coming here along the way," said Feeley.

However members of the HDBIB say they want to make Horizon Drive a destination through their upgrade plan.

Feeley says the motels along the stretch rely more on the I-70 traffic to turn a profit, and a median would make things too difficult for travelers to get to the motel where they want to stay.

The two sides simply need a fair compromise. All or none is not how our country works! One death is too many - hundreds of people depend on their income from these businesses. They should all have the fair opportunity to maintain their current economic status. This will insure everybody who has a job on Horizon doesn't lose it, due to businesses possibly failing because of the proposed scenerio. Wake up, we all need each other!

The business owners are right. If a few people die each year so they can keep making money, so be it.
