Vandalism of Holiday Decorations Growing Trend, Authorities Say

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- One resident is losing holiday spirit after waking up Sunday morning to find her front yard vandalized; Mesa County Sheriff's authorities say it's an increasing trend.

Sunday alone, Mesa County Sheriff's Deputies responded to two reports of decoration vandalism.

Kelly Potter, an Orchard Mesa resident, woke up Sunday morning to find the over-sized candy canes in her yard clumped together on the cement, two light-up stars on her roof gone and two holes ripped in a star display near the front door.

Potter says she's out about $300.

"It breaks my heart and it also broke a lot of my Christmas spirit. We take a lot of time in decorating our house and I know a lot of people in the neighborhoods do too. They want people to enjoy it. They don't want people to take advantage of it and tear it down," said Potter.

Potter says she will be putting in security cameras to look out for her house and neighborhood.

Authorities say because there really is no way to keep vandalism from happening, but putting a sign up warning vandals of security cameras might help deter them.
