Higher Education Budget Concerns

The state's higher education budget is not looking good.

The Colorado Commission on Higher Education met Thursday to discuss the state of the budget. Lieutenant Governor Joe Garcia, director of Colorado Department of Higher Education, was on hand to witness.

Despite revenues being slightly up, the budget is being squeezed by other programs needing state funding, like Medicaid and K-12 requirements. It appears that it will take more than just the commission to make a change.

"We need to get that word out because it's going to be a big lift that takes all of us working together to solve this problem and keep things going for the future," said Mark Cavauanaugh, the Chief Financial Officer for the Colorado Department of Higher Education.

For Colorado Mesa University, if the budget gets worse administration officials will be the ones responsible for cutting programs or raising tuition, not the state.
