Heavy DUI Enforcement During Super Bowl

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The Super Bowl weekend brings some of the biggest celebrations of the season to local bars and restaurants.

It also brings out patrol officials, who say Super Bowl Sunday is one of their heaviest DUI occasions of the year.

"Just within the last 24 hours, we've had five DUI arrests, two of them being crashes," explained Dan Chermok, a trooper with Colorado State Patrol.

DUIs cost the nation an average of $39 billion a year, but there's a much heavier price tag.

"There are 10,000 deaths annually from DUI causes," explained Chermok.

"I had a cousin who, he had twin boys and he got in a bad accident ... and he lost one of his sons. It was drinking and driving," said Lori Valencia.

Valencia is the designated driver for Rocky Mountain Pub, a locale that emphasizes safety not just on big nights like Sunday.

"We just have to make sure that they are not too intoxicated. It's just very important to us; providing the driving service is helpful," added Misty Rieger, a bartender at the pub.

"It keeps everybody safer; it keeps them from getting DUIs too," added Valencia.

"The main goal is safety. We want to keep people alive and get these drunk, impaired drivers off the road," said Chermok.
