Health Officials Caution Residents Going into Burn Season

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The spring open burning season begins on March 1 and health officials want folks to keep in mind what they are burning and how that will effect the valley's air quality.

Open burning permits are required to anyone burning at an elevation below 6,000 feet.

Health officials say after the poor air quality we experienced during the winter, they are asking residents to consider other options.

"There are alternatives to burning that we certainly encourage, the composting facility at the Mesa County Solid Waste Facility will accept most organic materials free of charge," said Ed Brotsky with the Mesa County Health Department.

Some of the allowed materials to burn are:
- Agricultural Debris
- Dry Weeds
- Garden Debris
- Tree, Shrub or Bush Trimming LESS than 1 inch in Diameter
- Recreational Bonfires Using Untreated Wood

Some prohibited burning materials are:
- Leaves
- Grass Trimmings
- Tree/Bush Limbs MORE than 1 inch in Diameter
- Garbage
- Construction or Demolition waste, or other materials that release toxic smoke.

To apply for a burning permit, visit the corresponding fire department for your area or the Mesa County Health Department.

I'll pass on the permit, don't need one. Thanks anyhow.
