Head Start Program Faces Sequester Cuts

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Mesa County residents came together Friday morning to voice their concerns over spending cuts that they say will have a big impact on Grand Valley kids.

More than 50 people gathered along seventh street in Grand Junction holding signs and making statements about possible effects of the national sequester.

They were there to support the Head Start Program, which helps out low-income families with preschool-aged children.

According to organizers of Friday's event, more than 2,000 children are currently involved in the program throughout Colorado.

Organizers say if 'across-the-board' spending cuts are implemented, officials are looking at one million dollars in cuts, which may cause the organization to drop hundreds of children from the program.

"Some of these children, it's their only opportunity to have that education, and if they lose that, who can afford $30 a day in daycare? That's what it is even if you have a good job. I think what we're hoping for is just to get support, get the word out there, and hopefully get people to re-think taking that money from our schools," said Mark Mayasich, regional operations manager with Head Start.

Organizers say children who are enrolled in Head Start receive mental health, nutrition and social education.

BN, The wealthy have done more for this country than obama and all the democrats combined. What will you do when all the freebies stop coming to buy your vote? Why do the dems pick the poor to cut funds from? It is to make everybody but them look bad. The dems could have stopped funding their pet projects that pay their environmentalist friends hundreds of millions of dollars that are wasted on their lifestyles, but no, they choose to stop funding the programs like head start for the people like you who don't know better to protest and blame the rich. Pretty smart people, them democrats, they know how to play the political games to their benefit, not the people.

This all would be over if the republicans would quit giving tax breaks to the wealthy at the expense of the poor.

More gloom and doom stories from the White House. This all could be fixed if the liberals would just stop spending money on worthless projects.
