Demand for Gun Safety Classes Rises

GRAND JUNCTION Colo.- More and more women have been registering for gun safety classes. Local and national chains are noticing the changing demographic.

In the wake of the nightmare in Aurora that left 12 dead and 58 injured, people are realizing that this can happen anywhere. Locals want to protect themselves and more and more residents are turning toward gun safety classes as a result.

Top Shot, a local gun shop, is experiencing a shift in the demographic attending their gun classes. "On average, in every class I'm getting about four to six women. They're definitely outnumbering the men right now," said Daniel Lente, owner of Top Shot. The same is true for Cabela's.

"We've got a lot of focus now towards our female clientele," said Jesse Eckley, general manger of Cabela's. "Women are wanting to be able to protect themselves and their children."

Top Shot offers a weekly conceal carry course that focuses on youth gun safety, how to clean and store guns and Colorado gun laws.

The shooting in Aurora has also brought up the controversial subject of gun laws in Colorado and around the nation.
