GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Mesa County Commissioners accepted a $200,000 grant from Great Outdoors Colorado to go toward Phase 2 of the Riverfront Trail System project.

County officials estimate Phase 2 construction will cost $1,169,177. The county has since received $765,000 in federal grants, $200,000 in state grants, $39,000 in contributions from local entities and a promised $6,750 from Western Colorado Conservation Corps.

Officials say the county will end up paying $158,427, which is only about 13 percent of the total cost of Phase 2.

"The county does work very hard to do these grant applications to try to bring some of those federal and state dollars that we all pay, the community of course, through our taxes back into our community and make sure we're bringing those back for local projects," said Jessica Peterson of Mesa County.

County officials say Phase 1 of construction should wrap up by the end of the summer, leaving enough time for Phase 2 to start before the end of the year.
