Grande Rivers Vineyard Unveils Benefit Wine

PALISADE, Colo.- This year the Roice-Hurst Humane Society is trying a different approach to fundraising, teaming up with Grande Rivers Vineyards.

“We decided it would be a great fundraiser so we created the merlot, she did, and we had a local artist do the wine label and here we are tonight about a year later,” said Julie Butherus, Roice-Hurst board president.

The commemorative 2010 merlot had its debut Friday night.

“We’re just trying this out to help raise money for our four-legged friends,” said Naomi Smith of Grande Rivers Vineyards.

At least a dollar of each bottle sold will go straight to Roice-Hurst and Butherus says on opening night they had at least 150 people attend.

“Grand Junction is the most supportive community I have ever experienced. You can call anybody and they always show up,” said Butherus.

The commemorative wine will be sold at Grande Rivers Vineyards for the rest of the year. Smith says she’s already making plans for next year.

“We’re hoping that it goes well because we would like to do a new animal every year and then we would probably switch out the wine every year as well so that we can just change it up,” said Smith.

Roice-Hurst officials say donating money in any way is very important to their cause. Those who attended the unveiling said the wine isn’t too bad either.

“Merlot is my favorite choice in wines and this was very smooth. I really did enjoy it,” said Debbie Rieger.

“We were really pleasantly surprised. We found out it was really good and at a good price too,” said Rick Rieger.

“It was really nice, it was a really light fruity merlot and the label is just beautiful,” said Randy Rex.

Wine made with frac fluid laced water will harm you. The natural gas companies upstream in New Castle, Silt and Rifle, are allowed to dump 40% of their produced waste-water into the Colorado River. The wineries are using this to water their vineyards. Be aware of what you're putting into your body. Dangerous.
