Grand Valley Zoo Discussion Continues

by KREX News Room
by Danielle Kreutter

FRUITA, Colo. - The Grand Valley Zoological Quest is slowly moving forward in their plan to bring a zoo to the city of Fruita.

Tuesday night, the Quest asked Fruita City Council if they would be interested in partnering with them on operations of the zoo and if the city would donate land, that's currently vacant, where the old sewer lagoons were.

"There is considerable reclamation work to be done on the land before it's ready to be turned over to anybody else, but City Council will probably discuss this in the workshop in January," said Mayor Lori Buck.

City officials say the zoo could increase tourism and traffic into the city but because of interest in the new location, the project is still in the very early stages.

How soon everyone forgets that this idea has already been tried once. Years back we had a small zoo next to Fruita High School and it failed bad. Not sure that this is the answer that the valley is looking for. Sounds like it is just going to end up costing tax payers a lot of money.

A Zoo is a great idea. I live about an hour away from Fruita and desperately crave for some kind of culture other than clothes shopping in Junction and a teeny-tiny butterfly exhibit. I know people from other areas would be excited to visit the zoo and make a day of it including a movie and lunch or dinner out. People who live on the Western Slope don't travel to Fruita for hiking, etc. we can do that everyday in our own area. We need a variety. About time someone thought of this ammenity.

Well what the heck, Fruita, Grand Junction, Mesa County, & Mack all need a place to dump more taxpayer monies into. You bet if any zoo gets started the whole valley's taxpayers will foot the bill.

All around bad idea...population wise not large enough to support such a venture. Any zoo here would be small and lack luster when compared to others. Commend the idea to do something but not a zoo. Folks come to the area for outdoor activities not a zoo. I see municipalities being financially responsible for this when it fails. Hope I'm wrong.
