GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Grand Junction police are warning of a new scam that is sweeping across the area and has already cost a local restaurant $1,000.

Officials say a man called a local restaurant during a busy time of day, claiming to work for a local power company.

He said the restaurant had a past due balance on its account and power would be shut off if they didn't pay.

The scammer provided instructions on how to pay the balance by taking the restaurant's credit card information.

If you receive a similar phone call, make sure that you hang up and call the power company at the number listed on your bill to verify you owe money.

If you believe you are a victim of this scam please call the Grand Junction Police Department.
