Grand Junction Police Investigate Suspicious Death

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Grand Junction Police have confirmed they are conducting a suspicious death investigation involving a man whose family claims was brutally beaten.

Police are unable to release any details in the case due to the open investigation; however, Catherine Stonewall, the sister of 38-year-old Daniel Marques, said he died Tuesday night at Community Hospital after several attempts to revive him.

She says Marques went to Whiskey River for some time. She was told he had an altercation with some people there. It is unknown how many people were involved. Stonewall said Marques left as a result.

Around 2:45 a.m., operators received a 911 call from a concerned taxi driver, who says he saw Marques at the Village Inn on North Avenue. He appeared to have been beaten.

After speaking with hospital officials, Stonewall believes it was murder. "The more I'm learning, the more sick I become. She said that he had massive hemorrhaging in his abdomen and actually bled out. He coded at 4 a.m.," said Stonewall.

It's unclear where the trauma occurred, at what point Marques left the bar or if he had been followed.

Investigators say they don't know whether Marques was attacked or an active participant in the physical altercation. Police are looking into the incident further and searching for any potential suspects.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call GJPD at 242-6707.
